Our Teachers

The mediocre teacher tells, The good teacher explains, The superior teacher demonstrates, The great teacher inspires. William Arthur Ward

KATE BEHREND R.A.D rts - Artistic Director (Arco)

KATE BEHREND R.A.DKate established Dance Dynamics Byron Bay in 2000. Her dream was to create a school where children can thrive personally, technically and creatively. She instils in her school the development of a clean ballet and dance technique via safe dance practise. Her ethos and methods have taken the school from it's humble beginnings, to a leading centre. Dance Dynamics has had the pleasure of seeing many students being accepted as fulltime students into illustrious city-based dance schools such as; National College of Dance, Brent Street, Ev & Bow to name a few. These students have moved on to careers as professional dancers and/or qualified teachers.

Kate is a big advocate for guiding children to develop their intrinsic motivation while actively rejecting the clichéd pushy ‘dance mum’ environment than can be so prevalent in the dance industry. This develops a well-rounded, mentally healthy child that is self-motivated and capable of achieving their desires, without the negative mental impacts common in the industry.

Kate was four years old when she began dancing at the Tessa Maunder Ballet School in Newcastle. By six years of age she was performing regularly in competitions and events, both as a soloist and as a troupe member. At fourteen, Kate’s talent for dance was recognised when she was accepted into fulltime training at the Marie Walton Academy of Dance (now known as the National College of Dance). Kate has danced with the Australian Ballet Company in their rendition of “Swan Lake”. Kate began her formalised dance teacher training through the Royal Academy of Dance, graduating three years later with distinction.

Determined to understand the power of the mind in order to benefit the development of elite dancers, Kate gained qualifications in NLP-Neuro Semantics and The Demartini Method. She incorporates this knowledge into her teaching which greatly benefits Dance Dynamics students.

As well as being a qualified dance teacher with over twenty years teaching experience, Kate is a regular consultant to dancers and dance schools (both locally and interstate), and a frequent contributor to “Dance life Australia”. Most importantly to Kate, she is a dedicated wife and mother.

She then emigrated to New Zealand where she became a teacher/choreographer and established her own dance school, where her students went on to win numerous national competitions and choreography awards

Not quite ready to give up on her own performing days quite yet, she joined a dinner theatre group which performed shows across New Zealand.

In 2010, Loretta, her husband and their two children made Australia their new home.

Many years later her love and passion for dance continues with her next adventure here with us at Byron Dance Dynamics as our School Manager.

MEGAN WERNEROriginally from North Queensland, Megan began dancing at the age of three in Classical Ballet, Tap and Jazz. By the age of five, Megan began her formal Ballet examinations through the Royal Academy of Dance and was competing regularly as a soloist. For seven consecutive years, Megan was selected to represent the Far North Coast in various ensembles that performed in Sydney. She continued to compete regularly and began teaching as an assistant at the age of 16. In her senior years of schooling, Megan delved into the art of choreography and coaching. In her HSC Dance, Megan ranked 1st in her year, received a ‘call back’ for her performance piece and was the recipient of the 2009 Creative and Performing Arts award.

In 2010, Megan began teaching classes at Dance Dynamics. During this time, Megan taught a range of genres, prepared students for examinations and, with her background in competitive dance, prepared groups for eisteddfods.

As Megan’s love for dance continued to flourish, so did her love of teaching. In 2014 Megan graduated University with a strong passion for teaching and a Bachelor of Education (Primary). Megan’s capacity as a teacher was formally recognised in 2016 when she received the Northern New South Wales ‘Excellence in Education’ award as an Early Career Teacher.
